How will they confirm I am in labour?

This can only be established by an internal examination of your cervix. This examination will be done once the midwife or obstetrician is happy that you are having regular and effective contractions. The effect of these contractions cause your cervix to soften and open up (dilate). This can be assessed when you have a vaginal examination.
