How early can baby's sex be identified from a scan?

The earliest is at about 11-12 weeks, however many hospitals and even experts prefer to wait until at least 16 weeks-and only then if fetal sexing is really important. The reason for this is that there is a significant error rate of around 10% at 11-12 weeks even in experienced hands. Most hospitals wait until the routine detailed scan at around 20 weeks, when baby's gender can usually be seen clearly.
