I'm 22 weeks and had vaginal herpes 3 years ago. Will I need special tests or even a Caesarean Section?

The current UK advice is clear-unless you have a primary (first) attack of genital herpes at around the time of delivery, then there is no reason to have a Caesarean Section, as the risk to baby is extremely small. This is because you have already produced protective antibodies that are circulating in your-and baby’s-circulation. So even if you have an outbreak in pregnancy, it would not normally lead us towards advising a Caesarean. There is little or no point in regular testing with vaginal swabs-there’s little correlation between the results of these and whether there is herpes virus in the secretions from your vagina at the time of delivery.
